This self-screening tool is not a substitute for a comprehensive allergy screening or consultation with a board-certified allergist. If you suspect you may have allergies, a simple skin or blood test can help determine the type of allergens that cause reactions for you. However, these tests must be interpreted correctly if they are to be accurate predictors of actual allergy or lack of allergy to a substance. Consult with a board-certified allergist if:
- • Your symptoms include the warning signs of asthma such as:
- • Struggling to catch your breath;
- • Wheezing and coughing; or
- • Frequent shortness of breath or tightness in your chest.
- • Your allergies are causing secondary symptoms such as frequent sinus infections, ear infections or colds.
- • Your allergies are severely interfering with your ability to carry out day-to-day activities or continue to degrade your quality of life.
- • Taking medications, such as antihistamines and other medications, does not control your allergy symptoms or you want to be able to reduce the amount of medication required to control your symptoms.
